Your Landlord’s Insurance Doesn’t Cover Your Stuff. Here’s What Does.

New tenant holdings keys to property

If you rent a home or apartment, your landlord has insurance on the building. That policy protects their property. It does not protect yours.

If there’s a fire, a burst pipe, or a break-in, the landlord’s policy fixes the walls and the roof. Your couch, laptop, clothes, and kitchen stuff are on you. That’s the gap renters insurance fills.

What does renters insurance cover?

  • Your belongings: furniture, electronics, and clothes damaged or stolen in a covered event like fire, smoke, or theft

  • Liability: if a guest gets hurt in your place or you accidentally damage the unit

  • Extra living expenses: a hotel and meals if your place can’t be lived in after a covered loss

What it usually does not cover

  • Flood, which is typically a separate policy

  • Your roommate’s things, unless they’re on the policy. Each roommate should have

    their own.

  • High-value items like jewelry and firearms, which often have limits

Is it worth it for the little I own?

A lot of renters guess they don’t own much. Add up a TV, laptop, phone, bed, couch, clothes, and kitchen items, and it’s usually more than you think. Replacing all of it at once is a hard month for anyone.

Renters insurance is one of the least expensive policies we write. Many landlords require it in the lease now.

Bundle it with your car

If you already have auto insurance, ask us to quote renters with it. Most people save money with both in one agency.

Landlords, a quick note

If you own rentals, ask your tenants to carry renters insurance. It protects them and keeps small claims off your policy. We write landlord coverage too.
